As we start the new year it is important to set personal and career goals but one must remember to reflect in the past year, take the lessons learned and improve upon them.
It is no secret that 2016 was a year full of surprises. From a political stand point to a rapid change in our Earth’s conditions, the world is going through a crucial moment and as the next generation we can’t just ignore it. A few weeks ago I overheard on the NYC subway someone said “It doesn’t matter if you believe in Climate change or not, the environment does not care what you believe in. Climate change is happening”.
I am not a politician and I have little influence in what happens in the world. But remembering to think global and act local, I have made a commitment to design responsible. Whether is a residential project, commercial or hospitality, at MASON D+D we strive on designing to save our future. What this means is to pay careful attention to materials used, work with local vendors and design spaces for better flow and quality of life.
I often talk about the difference between designing and decorating. As an engineer I believe a designer’s role is critical to any business model. Professional design is based on data and is geared to a better way of living. This is why the United Nations launched a collaborative platform – Building Legacy: Designing for Sustainability, during last years Design Miami fair. The UN recognizes architecture, design and infrastructure as key contributors to their sustainable goals for the upcoming years.
For 2017 we expect a focus on materiality and sustainability. Often times clients believe to design sustainable means to compromise aesthetics or an increase in costs. At MASON D+D we believe a sustainable focus design does not mean to compromise on aesthetics or usability.
Wishing you a great 2017!
